Ip Man (Donnie Yen)
A grandmaster of the Wing Chun style of kung fu in Foshan. His devotion towards the martial arts means he often neglects his wife and son, resulting in tension and discontent in the family. Ip shoots to fame when he defeats kung fu masters from the north in a nation-wide wushu championship. After this, hundreds desire to learn kung fu from him. Later, when the Japanese Occupy Foshan during the Sino-Japan war, Ip is forced to work as a coalminer. He is then invited to fight in sparring matches for the enemy’s amusement. He demonstrates his superior fighting skills by defeating his opponents despite being heavily outnumbered and wins the admiration of the Japanese Colonel, Mr. Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi). General Miura then challenges Ip to a championship fight. The outcome of the match inspires the Chinese villagers to rise up and defeat their oppressors.
